Learning writing and mixing

This is a song I recorded recently, it's called Write Through It, RyanB910 - Music - Hulkshare

I'm writing music and trying to get better at that while also trying to get better at mixing as well. I've been trying to learn how to make the vocals sit better on an instrumental because I've been told I mix the vocals too loud. Should I not use compression as much? The plug ins I used were Rvox, T-Racks classic compressor and some eq along with delay.... any help would be appreciated.
