Mix off: Forever - pop / rock CCM track

This is a cover of "Forever" by Bethel/Kari Jobe.

It's been a little while since I've posted one of these. I've been working with a local singer to record her singing a few songs, and this is the first one that I've managed to somewhat finish. I thought it'd be fun to post the raw tracks up and see what creative mixes people come up with - please have at it. It was all recorded in very short order - 1 evening for all the music, and about 45 minutes for all the vocals. All recorded through my Behringer X18, with an SE Condensor mic and DI'd guitar/bass. All the keys are Logic native synths.

72 BPM 4/4, 95 bars.

In the bag you'll find:

Vocals (One lead, two doubled, and two backing / harmonies these have all been tuned as best I could)
Guitars (Two tracks with effects, these are just the Logic patches I used, also raw guitar is included - there's only one guitar track used, just doubled with different logic patches)
Bass (One track)
A number of keyboard tracks / synths including the main piano line
Drum tracks - these were generated using Logic's drummer feature. I can upload the midi file on request.

Without further ado, here's the link to the raw files:

I enjoyed working on the mix. That being said, it was well after my bedtime and upon listening to it the following day (today) there are things I would have done differently, such as more piano presence etc. And your assumptions about the synth parts are correct But the mix here is how I pretty much hear the song. Its a very nice song all the way around that you and the singer should be proud of!

I feel like the drum mix is not quite there.. but just my preference - I like to hear that cymbal wash behind choruses..

Thanks very much - hope you had fun mixing it!

Was trying to figure out how to add attachments but I think I got it! My goal was to keep the vocals sounding natural while sitting within a full sounding mix. I used the synths to fill the soundscape without competing with the vocals.

I took the vocals .piano, and the bass, and then reproduced the rest. I didnt have time to do the entire song,
but here's a verse, prechorus,and chorus.

Here's my take.

Maybe I've finally learned how to mix?

I might as well give some critique if I'm expecting to get that
from others. Every mix in this thread is at least ok in my opinion
so I'm just gonna mention what I think was wrong with them.

wydsiwyrg:

Your mix has a bit too much boxiness in it. Maybe cut some low mids?

sdsi:

You had some nice eq'ing going on - no boxiness, but in my opinion the mix is too dry.

jamSTHOLM:

That vocal reverb doesn't fit in the song in my opinion. Also the vocal is a bit
too separate from the rest of the mix.

Stanley C:

Your v3 mix has too much vocal processing IMHO. The snare is too thin. Mix needs to be a bit more clear.

joecandy:

You had the most impressive mix. Hard to pinpoint obvious problems. Maybe make the vocals more dry and simple between chorus parts to create contrast.

Great mix - really like it. Perhaps a bit over compressed for my liking, but the choruses sound very "radio ready".

Hopefully I sorted out the boxiness on this version. Remixed with just Logic out of the box plugins.

Wydsiwyrg, glad that you liked the mix.

And your new version is definitely better than the first one.
