Need some fresh ears to evaluate my mixing/mastering effort

I've been working on finishing up my latest project, and am hoping to get some input from you guys before I pull the trigger and make a final decision.

Also keep in mind that I don't have any mics that cost more than $150. I use a Phonic FireWire Helix 12, and I record in a mostly untreated basement. I'm sure there is a limit to the greatness that can be achieved.

Here are a couple tracks from the current mastering effort...

Updated mixes....

Updated mix!

I redid the EQ on the drum tracks and bass. I think the bass drum sounds a lot better. It was a mess in the first mix.

Listening to the first one (new master)

Sounds a bit dark and congested... Think you could cut some lows and bring a little bit of air into the mix, or skip the highs... try some mid... Not sure about the midrange...not sure about the high end either... Start with the low end and continue... Maybe it's time to have a reference to check your master/mix against... I've never done that but it makes sense....
