My Skills Last Summer VS Today! ~Mix VS Mix = Same Song~

This is a song that i recorded last summer!

The file titled "old mix" was mixed and mastered summer 2010.

The file titled "new mix" was mixed and mastered December 21st 2010.

After 6 months more of learning and researching, I feel that there is a SUBSTANTIAL improvement!

Let me know what you think!

thanks!

*UPDATE*

i mixed the song again, here is 2 versions.

Which one is the best now? Is it an improvement from last week?

Vote on the poll still if the new one is better, thanks!

Well, I don't have my usually monitor system. But it booms and snaps more and is louder. That is the biggest difference I noticed. But over all not bad. Not really the Poll option I wanted to choose. Over all it sounds a bit scooped in the mids. Biggest thing I'd work on is clarity.

But not bad.

whats the best way to make the clarity better? i used waves c-4 and i do a 100-200 hz, eq compressor reduction to taste, and then a 180-600 hz eq compressor reduction to taste to reduce mudd.

then i usually add 1.5 db @ 12000hz, with a Q of 2.

You can try adding some top end...that will help over all. But I'm not digging the guitars much. Maybe try pulling a little 2k out of your guitars and see how that sounds.

If you've got a frequency analyzer plugin, you can see how your top end is doing. I always naturally mix a little dull and have to boost the highs...mostly due in part to my room and such. Try using a high shelving EQ when your boosting too...just don't overdo it.

i always do a very narrow Q10 with pro tools eq-7, @ 1khz on guitars....is this good?

You use a Q10 on just the guitars? Seems like a waste of processing power.

I'm not hearing 1k as the issue...it all just depends on what your hearing.

I'm just going off of what I am hearing.

i use the 7 band digi-EQ and i use a very narrow Q like 10 on the 1khz area of the guitars.

but any other things i should do or just some clarity?

Yeah, that's all I can comment on so far. I don't have my usual monitoring system, so I can't really comment accurately further than that.

after listening multiple times on many different systems, i have come to the conclusion, that other than the guitars coming up VERY slightly and vocals coming down VERY VERY slightly.

the "new mix 2" is on point, what do you guys think?
