Having fun mixing for Lyle Workman

I am having so much fun mixing all of the music cues for a new film. The music writer / arranger is none other than Lyle Workman.

Lyle has done films such as: Superbad, 40 Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Get Him To The Greek.

The music itself is much like a typical rock band. If you have seen Superbad, you get the idea. There are drums, bass, guitars, keys, and textures. There are no vocals which makes things a bit easier. He recorded it all in his home studio and he did a great job. Most instruments need very minimal EQ.

Once each cue is mixed, I then have to print as many as 19 different stems. It's a bit of work to make sure everything is labeled correctly but I think I'm in the groove now with it all.

I wish I could say more about the film itself but once it is out in theaters, I will post again to let anyone who is interested know.

I mixed a song on Lyle's latest solo album (Harmonic Crusader) but this is the first time I have mixed music for one of his film projects. He is such a pleasure to work with and I hope I can do more work with him in the future.

If you ever get the chance to work with Lyle, take it!

He's done great solo work, and also with Todd Rundgren, Bourgeois Tagg
and the late great Kevin Gilbert. Check out "Goodness Gracious" from the
album Thud, by Kevin. Kevin was an amazing musician who played nearly
every instrument (like Todd) as well as engineering his own work. So any
musicians asked to play on their songs certainly were of a higher caliber.
Lyle's guitar work on "Goodness Gracious" was brilliant and one of a kind.
