Mixoff 2010

Hi!
this is a contest that I have started on many other internet forums, and I wanted to share it with you swell so that we can have more contesters!

I found a old, old song on my HDD, dated 2002 and got the idea to post it for public mixing. The rules are simple:

- There are no rules, You are allowed to do whatever you want!

The song is nothing that ever will be published and you have no demand to give the mix to me or someone else when you have finished it, this is all about the fun part of mixing and for people to work with the same material and thereby give one another accurate help.

The song is called "Driving on a red route" and was recorded 2002
by my old band (No longer existing) Catherine:
Untitled Document
The recording of the song never finished, and you will hear a empty passage after the stick in the song, this is one more factor why I choice it, cause then people might understand that I'm not doing this to get a free mix in any way, and to assure you even more of that, you can mark the mix with something (Delete one word in the voc. or adding a watermark)

The song is poorly recorded in Logic and was in fact one of my first songs I ever recorded. Some tracks does not sound good at all, but it's there the challenge is
and the more devided your results can become.
And before you critizise the the performance or the recording, you should know that I was 16 at the time, and some of the members in the band were only 14yr.

Here is a old mix I made that will work as a reference and for you all to understand what kind of song it is before deciding to give it a go:

MIX:
http://www.catherinemusic.se/mp3/Driv2.mp3

Here is the same mix in AIF-format:
http://www.catherinemusic.se/mp3/Driv2.aif

I have named all tracks accordingly.
They are in 24bit, 44.1khz, AIF format
Some tracks are in stereo even if they are mono recordings.
Logic does this when exporting some times
It's a total of 38 Tracks
I have packed all tracks in .RAR archives, so you need Winrar (Win) or UnrarX (Mac) to unpack them.

If something doesn't work as expected, let me know and I'll fix it fast!

Here are mediafire-links to the rares:

RAR Del 1 (100mb)
RAR Del 2 (100mb)
RAR Del 3 (100mb)
RAR Del 4 (100mb)
RAR Del 5 (50mb)

If those links are to slow to download, you can also access the files though my FTP-server:

Olofs FTP

All results will be released here (If you want you mix there of course):

Happy mixing!

Personally I thought that mix was pretty smooth and the performance was fine too. Although perhaps you did a fair bit of editing Not a bad song either.

I had a go at it. The vocals were so bright they just didn't fit. I failed you there lol. I did however do the rest, just without vocals. Drums, personally, kill. 3 kicks and 5 snares for this one. Guitars are all Lepou amp sims. It's also just a clip, if you want the full thing, just let me know.

Great. If you want to be in the contest I need the entire song.
If you are worried I'll "steel" then you can watermark it.

And as you say, some of the tracks are not pleasant to work with.
but everyone has the same challenge there.

When I get the entire song I'll add it here:

Untitled Document

Will listen now!

Alright here's with vocals and my crappy mastering job. Those vocals are...hard to say the least. The rest is killer!

Yeah nice songs, I'd also like to remix it, well hopefully I find the time.
I'd like to rearrange it a bit if that's okay. What is the tempo exactly?

Thanks

The tempo is 130bpm and the key is D major (Raising to E major)
You are free to do whatever you please, no rules.

The guideline of RMS is -12 DBfs
We will have one player with orginal RMS and one player with All mixed normalized to -12 DBfs
when we revile all final mixes.

A jury + votes will determine whose winning.

I love the song, impressive for such a young band recording themselves in my opinion. I'm downloading and will be happy to contribute what I can!

Turthfully - this is a really strong song. Lyrics are too easy for me and if given a bit more thought, just my opinion here, then this song would be a hit potential.

Very Wheezer!

Yes.. the lyric sucks big time.. but we were only 16.. and this is not our native language.. so I guess thats why.

Significantly better than my Swedish!

Would you consider a re-write or even a co-write. There is a few avenues I may be able to push this towards.

We have over 60 songs with no final mixes on my computer.. and that's what I'm doing now.. trying to make final mixes of old stuff.. most of it better recorded then this.

Here is the Roadie's mix...

Hi - may be a bit rough and here it is...I'd liek to spend more time on the vocal and also get a proper guitar sound from the DI's...I use cakewalk "ampsim" which is a wicked old plug...two versions here...one is pure mix and one is mix and a little bit of limiting on the final waveform.

let me know...

OK - I took these files out...I posted an updated mix a few posts down from here...

I shortened some parts, lengthen the chorus and started with a rough mix. Unfortunately I have no more time right now. I'd like to finish this mix after eastern if that's okay? I really like this song.

refined roadie

hey - the roadie refined things a little from the earlier mix last night...added some depth to the lead vox and put in a few automation rides tonight...also made an edited version...may have turned up the bass guit too much!

These mixes are not mastered.

I like the edited version better myself...

here they are:

Great mix! My favorite so far. Very clean, I like the vocal upfront, not sure if you replaced/enhanced the drums, whatever works, sounds good, good punch; nice amount of separation overall.
it actually made me enjoy the song more :-)
now, I know you mastered it too, which gives you the "louder is better advantage", but regardless, to me it's the best mix so far.

ITB. Mastered with C4, Analog2, and L3.

There's a glitch on the turn before verse 2, too busy to rebounce.

I'm glad you like my appraoch. I didn't sample replace or enhance anything. It seems the drummer was great - actually I really liked how he played so no trickery necessary IMVHO ...
regarding mastering: I wouldn't call it mastering but you're right I mixed into a limiter. If you wanna call that mastering so be it

I liked the track
