Finished (sort of) a back burner tune

What do you think of the tune and/or mix?

Sounding great man.

I don't do all aspects of my stuff, I have a cowriter and don't really mix/master only do a bit of work on the vocals, so I don't know if that counts as 1 man but for the most part I do everything alone, electronic/dance rock type stuff -

Thanks. I like that synth sound you have that is prominent at the beginning, what did you use for that?

I think it was from Hybrid or some other plugin & heavily modified but I'm not sure, all the sounds were from cowriters library haha

That's a good one. I'm coming up on the 50. Pretty soon we can start doing tunes like "Oy, My Prostate!" It's a nice change of pace for you to do something with a bit more instrumentation. Mixing it up is always good.

That's a nice one. I like that kind of stuff. I've been pushing CocoRosie on people lately, because they have this same sort of 'just the emotion, no sprinkles' type of thing going on in so much of their music. You'd probably love them.

Thanks man!

I used to love em - maybe it's time for a revival of that love. I'm checking now on Spotify!

I'M LOVING this right now ->>

Cheers man!

Nice song - Like it as it is - but at the same time I would want to hear another version with less distortion, maybe just you and the guitar - naked with a friendly indian pipe and a porn magazine.

hey greatgreatgreatgreatriver/Lenny - I've been playing around with the mix of the song the jars that I posted the other day. I think I have a much better kick bass balance, cut back on alot of verb, found several plugs that were distorting, hi-passed a bunch of stuff, panned, 'rubbed in the guitars, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks for the ideas/suggestions. As you said - it was a weird mix, let me know if I made it weirder.

Wow....nice work, man.

For me the adjustments to the verb and the filters made this tune SO much better.......got it up on the monitors right now....nice balance.

Hello!

For me it's too much reverb and too bright - I think the levels are good though. I don't think the reverb fits the song either. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions. I'm burned out on my own music -

Sorry.

Hi greatgreatgreatriver. I am a lifelong chronic reverb abuser. I freely admit it. I can't go cold turkey, so I've been backing myself off real slow. Both on the size of the verb and the amount. Also when I like a part I have a really bad tendency to put it WAY out in front, like 6 to 10 db to hot.

No need for sorry - your comments were a HUGE help.

@ Lenny - thanks!

nice song! but it's agree a little bright, and the reverb is a little heavy on the vocals.

Historically every single one of my recordings has been described as really dull and with two much low and low/mid.

I've been trying to combat that with selective hpf, strategic narrow cuts and a slight boost centered on 8k with a uad plug. All tips based on reading 1000s of posts here. I'm probably overdoing it on the boost as it takes me forever to settle on something not 'too much'.

I also admitted - I'm a chronic reverb junkie. I've settled on backing off the verbs on the send returns by about 1/2 a db every time I re-mix, and it keeps clearing up little by little :-)

dgcobb - can you let me know if it feels like the entire mix is too bright, or a specific instrument or instruments. Also if you can let me know if it feels like the reverb is too heavy on the lead, the harmonies or both.

I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment - I love this place!

OK - I had a nice brunch, went to my daughters basketball game and had dinner and came back with a fresh set of ears.

I definitely heard the point about the verbs. Backed off the lead verb and background verb by a couple db. Dropped the send returns by a db or so.

I also re-centered the eq boost and cut it in half.

I think a big part of the brightness is the acoustic. I was playing my buddies awesome small body Martin. I recorded the acoustic track, re-recorded a double of it - then we capoed up and I played different chords to double the part an octave up. I just panned these around, there is no other eq or processing whatsoever on the acoustic.

Thanks! Anybody have mix suggestions? I'm thinking of adding some blues electric guitar on the side.

I thought it sounded great.

You seem to be shooting for a certain currently very popular laid back acoustic / vocal vibe and I think you are getting pretty darn close. I don't have to name any names, and that's not a jab. Forgive me if I'm wrong :-)

I do have a couple questions - how are you getting the guitar and vocal so incredibly present? I have a couple decent mics and pres in my locker, but can't get anywhere close to that crystal clear sound with the high end sheen. What are you playing and how are you recording it.

As an aside - I think the drums are the weakest link. There is something very strange with the timing/feel and they sound canned. I think it would cool for you to try and hook up with a drummer who plays a small, uncomplicated kit and is really good at brush work and ancillary percussion.

Could slip that in toward the end....around 2:05 or so when you do that change.

I agree about the drums....it's that kick. Love to actually hear what the tune sounds like without drums.

I agree with another poster here. The track sounds really cool, with the exception of the over busy bass drum. The BD could be notched down a few db's.

If you add a slide, I would make it pretty sparse and 'verb.

Loved that tune, voice, guitar are GREAT

Lovely tune man - I would love to hear it without the drums and bass, etc. Just you and the guitar.
