College final assessment mix - please have a listen

Hey there !

This is my first post, but i have used this place as a reference for a few things over time... anyway, it is time to join the fray i believe !

Last year i completed a course in audio engineering here is Australia. For my final assessment i recorded one of the performance departments bands in the Exuphonix 24-track analogue studio. Pity i didn't know then all that i know now.. i could have done something REALLY special. Instead, i spent hours learning how to use all the outboard gear properly and how to mix in a studio environment, rather than a DAW enviroment, and while i come out knowing a lot more than i started, i didn't reeally get a good mix together in the studio. I therefore dumped it all into Cubase and took it home.

This is the result:

I used all default or freeware plug-ins. I got a good mark for it (96%... Whoo!!!) but there are so many things wrong with it. I'm interested to hear what you guys think having fresh ears and all.

I'll accept your hardest comments !!

Vocal seems to get lost in the mix. I don't like the reverb on it during quiter parts, natural or artificial? I'd guess artificial, but you put a short decay time on it to just add a lil' bit to the vocal. The guitars sound real grainy when the distortion kicks in, and during the acoustic parts, they are too low. The snare sits back too far for me. come to think of it, alot of the tracks seem distant. Did you close mic?? it doesn't sound like it. The actual soud of the drums is good, but like i said, everything sounds a little distant and thin. I'm guessing for guitars, you aimed the mic directly at the cone, or possibly went direct. I'm no pro by any means, just my 2 cents.
