I must have got listening fatigue . Checking a bunch of old 80's albums I'm figuring the vocal trick they used was to filter bank the pop vocals, with a vocoder?

Listen to major hits like, Leggs ZZtop, Bad by Jackson, Journey, REO Speed, etc. that circa.

Ya 'Human nature' by MJ Thriller credits vocoding on the jacket.

I also swear that the uploaded clip is different . I mashed the headphones to my head and listen to the DAW and the link. Different. Just a little. Or I have listening fatigue.

Sometimes in dense parts like the chorus, you can hear up to 6/8 back vocal tracks mixed behind the main track, using also those tricks; to give a fat full sound.
Today there is also autotune / melodyne.
However, I'm not an expert of these things

I would prefer a more classic/simple/natural "rock approach": 1x stunning main vocal track + 1x (or max 2) stunning vocal back track for chorus density.
Of course "puzzle making" (cut copy paste trim etc etc) of several sessions, to build the perfect track.
