First mix with SSL Sigma and Nucleus 2

Hi,

For the past few weeks, I’ve been learning the SSL Sigma and Nucleus 2.

I have an instrumental work in progress mix but as I play, record and mix everything myself, I have kind of mixed myself into a circle. I need another pair of ears.

My mix is going from the Sigma out to a stereo pair of Warm Audio Pultecs and then into an SSL 500 series G Bus compressor.

I’m only lightly touching it with the bus compressor, around 2db gain reduction.

I have a way to go to feel fully comfortable with this new hybrid summing setup and before I start on the vocals, I just need some constructive criticism of this mix.

By the way, there is no automation yet between parts and sections. I just need to know if there are any serious problems with it before I move to the next step.

Learning the Sigma and Nucleus has been one hell of a steep learning curve but I’m hopefully getting better with them every day.

Thank you in advance.

Lives for gear
Over compressed. Drums are thin and get lost in the mix. Guitars are LLOOUDD. To many things in the mix competing and masking each other.
I would worry about the mix, not the mixdown.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to it.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow but I need to go back to square one and look at the eq, compression and make a lot of changes.

This is my first time out of the box and I’m learning ten things at once. I have few outboard that I’m trying to get used to too. I was never a good mixer in the first place (I’ve always had others record me) so I’m trying to learn it all at once.

I’ve clearly a lot to learn and will work very hard to get better.

Nucleus 2, sigma, and pro tools setup

Hi. I couldn't figure out how to start a new thread, so, I am putting this here because this information is NOWHERE. It took me 6 hours to figure out how to setup my Nucleus 2 so that I could switch between it controlling pro tools and my sigma at the press of a button. Note, of that 6 hours, 5 hours and 57 minutes were more searching for the right 3 minute fix.

How to setup a nucleus 2 with a sigma, in pro tools, so you can switch the nucleus between controlling pro tools and the sigma at the press of "DAW 2" on your controller.

1. Follow all setup instructions for each device provided by SSL upon purchase.

2. In Sigmas settings, change control protocol to "delta-mcu".

3. Change Sigmas iPmidi settings so that banks 1-8 are iPmidi channel 3 and 9-16 are iPmidi channel 4 respectively. Set midilearn to channel 5.

4. In nucleus 2 remote, go to the DAW tab and you have the option to select daw 1, 2, or 3. For DAW 1, set the profile to "Pro Tools".

5. In DAW 2, set the profile to "Tony 1" (mine was open box. I don't know if this was factory or forgotten). If you don't have Tony 1, try any other mcu based daw settings. If its MCU, it should work regardless, but I used the Tony 1 setting.

6. (NOTE. YOU SHOULD HAVE SET UP DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER VIA ETHERNET FOR EACH DEVICE PRIOR TO ANY OF THESE STEPS). FOR MAC ONLY: turn off wifi. You must be hardwired for your internet via a switch. Plug the computer into the switch via ethernet cable.

7. Plug the Nucleus into the switch via ethernet cable.

8. Plug the Sigma into the nucleus 2 via ethernet cable.

9. Power cycle all SSL equipment (turn it off then on again) and exit daw and remotes for sigma and nucleus.

10. Startup IN THIS ORDER.

A. Computer & interfaces.
B. SSL devices
C. Sigma and nucleus 2 software remotes
D. DAW.

And that's it. You should be good to go. To switch what the nucleus 2 is controlling, just press "DAW 2" to allow it to control the sigma and deselect it to control pro tools (default state).

One last note. I couldn't figure out why my Nucleus fades were sticking and locked. As it turns out, you must always press down on them from on to to release the locking mechanism inside. Good 2 know...

Dale, your mix

Hi Dale,

I just listened to your mix. So there are a few issues going on here.

First, I would try removing reverb from EVERYTHING to start. Its muddying your mix a lot.

Second, bring up your drums (not the cymbals, just the drums)

Turn off the EQ on everything.

After doing this, upload another link and I'll tell you what I hear.
