This is a fun thread. I would like to hear the raw and processed versions of some people's drum tracks so I can see where I am with things.

im trying to hunt down some photos from the session but in the end there were no special tricks i used i dont really know any haha.

the 57 on the top of the snare was placed about 8 cm from the rim and 8 cm high from the rim angled across the drum
toms 45 degree angle from skin bout 5cm away
hats 20 cm on the top near the edge angled across and in
oh (u87 mono)faced strait down in between first tom and snare 1.5 meters high (as high as poss)
L o/h (nt2)high 45 degree angle just outside kit perrimiter
r o/h (studio projects b3) high 45 degree angle just outside kit perrimiter
kik inside halfway in kik facing beater
outside kik (icis) 1.5 m away 50 cm off the ground with a bit off a tunnel made from offcut foam to focus more on kik
room AT 2020 other side of room facing a t fuser on the wall, 1 m from celing

the snare is a pearl 3 1/2 free floater brass snare i think with a coated empera

it helps that we have treated the room a little and made a little stage for the kit that provides a bit of timber under the kit as well as decupleing it from the carpeted floor ( would love an awesome soundin room)

my main problem is gettin each drum to have a focused sound while still sounding like a complete drum kit and not a bunch of drums put together, any tips would be great.

have a look at our myspace we should be posting this song as soon as it is done

Those files sound great!

(As a guitarist learning to tune drums) I'm curious how you guys are getting that particular sound out of your snare drums (high, dry, and resonant). For ex., are both heads tuned up high to the same pitch, or is one head significantly higher than the other? Thanks!

OK. Since I'm a newbie on drum-processing I can't help join in on the hi-jacking of this great thread (sorry).

My "clean" example is from Mads Mikkelsen Drum Grooves CD, e.g. just a stereofile. Since I didn't record, don't know about mics or pre's, but it sounds almost unprocessed and "raw" to me.

My processed "parallell" example includes the "clean" track plus two mults I did of the clean track e.g. just two more stereotracks. All based on info from this site (from Ken Lewis,The Thrill Factor, Mike Shipley, e-cue, Slipperman, Pensado among others) Mike Shipleys tips to not use reverb on drums was interesting ( squash room-mics in a comp instead for example)
I just run one of the mults through an UAD 1176, all buttons in, and totally smashed it and added a little dist and eq.

Only efx here is a 1/8 note tapedelay very subtle on the clean track.

Took me, a newbie, 20 min to come up with, all ITB. I can imagine what a little more experimenting can lead to.

I'd love to hear more examples from you guys.

Shoot!

Edit: Oh yeah, crank up the volume 'cause I didn't push it through the L1 or anything.
