VR Ball mic

VR Ball mic

Did a Ball binaural mic, plus 4 figure-8 mics for front to back and top to down processing possibility. Can be simple 2 channel stereo, surround sound, and even VR or Atmos.

The figure-8 in the photo is B9audio CMP1+C8 capsule.
It will fit any 19-20mm pencil type and short version.

can you expand a little bit on angles/spacings/distances between the mics you used? what plugins do you use to decode? and most importantly: how does it sound?!

This clip is 2 channel stereo, mostly the omni capsules with a little figure-8 front to back.


Planning to make the ball to be flexible for any microphones on the market with diameter 19~20mm, and length less than 7cm.
Diameter of the ball is 20cm. User can fit their own microphones into the ball or use B9audio microphones.

Please consider microphones diameter 19~21mm - this would be more compatible with more models.

21mm could be a problem. Not only diameter, but also the length. The microphone shall be less than 100mm including XLR plug, otherwise it will not be flat at the diaphragm and ball surface.
19 to 20 will accommodate Schoeps, Sennheiser, and B9audio as well. Not Neumann 183. It is just too long.

That's a pitty, because 21mm diameter would allow use of many other mics like the excellent modular line of MBHO - which has a great fig8 capsule.

MBHO's modulars are all 21mm diameter - older preamp body (603) is 122mm long, new preamp (604) is just 80mm long!

B9audio got excellent fig-8 capsules and perform at the same league as the leading name brands.
The preamp (CMP1) is just 50mm which is vital because you have to include XLR plug and keep the whole microphone within 10cm in order to squeeze in the 20cm ball.

Recorded with VR Ball, six microphones setup.
Omni pair: Binaural style
H Fig-8 pair: For MS decode with Omni pair, to create Front/Back stereo
V Fig-8 pair: For MS decode with Omni pair, to create High/Low stereo
Combined MS decode, to create any virtual pair of cardioid, sub-cardioid, omni-cardioid, pointing at any direction around the ball.
In this video, the final mix chosen is sub-cardioid, Front/High orientation.
