I have an Apogee Element 46 (Thunderbolt) and a Fast Track Pro (USB 1.1). I must admit that I'm not too audiophile to detect differences between both amplifiers. I have a Shure SRH440 and a Superlux HD330. Perhaps I have to compare them side by side.
