Erection ads with my youtube clips - targeted ads?

Browsing through some synthesizer demo's on YouTube, and notice in the corner an advertisement for erectile dysfunction(some product to alleviate or cure). I was under the impression that YouTube had targeted advertising based on the user's browsing habits.

My music computer is kept scrupulously clean, and I haven't browsed any sites which would suggest this type of problem. No porn, nor medical sites.
Normally recommended are ads for Native Instruments, or some other musical product. Why this?

You're a male aren't you?

A few years ago I bought something from the chemist. When I got home I realised that they had slipped in a pamphlet for some erectile dysfuntion product. Now, here is the question, did I just look like I had a problem in that department so the chemist slipped in the pamphlet or was it just something they gave to every male customer?

i believe youtube is owned by google, yes?

and i believe that recently there was a change in google's privacy policy, where they can now cross-reference your personal information (in the usual non-identifiable usage) across their various products.

have you sent emails on this subject via gmail? because i would guess that could trigger targeted ads on youtube.

Honestly, nothing in my life so far has any relevance to this problem. The last medical problem I had was pneumonia in 2010. I've never had any sexual problems published over the internetz!

Odd given the circumstances you are laying out here. Yes, Google does own YouTube and with their new privacy policy, they are collecting much of our data. Any search terms in Google, YouTube and keywords in Gmail probably trigger the targeted ads. I wouldn't be surprised either if using Chrome tracks every page you visit.

I wouldn't think much of it if I only see the ad once or twice. My guess is they know your age and are targeting a certain age group with those ads.

ad block

the name being typed as one word is censored. Probably so GS doesn't lose money when people don't see some guy BS'ing about protools in the top banner.

It may be just because google thinks you are male and a certain age. Plenty of stuff you look at online could give away your rough age.

Not many old ladies or teenage girls checking out the new Motif on YouTube.

The very fact that he is looking at Synthesizer Demos on YouTube is probably all that is needed to give away his rough age and sex. No personalized tracking or targeting is necessary.

i will say though-

sometimes targeted ads misfire.

i had a facebook ad for a long time that was something like:

"are you a single dad over 40 who needs financial assistance to go back to college?"

0 for 3 on that one.

If Google/Youtube tried to figure me out to target advertise to me, the whole system might have a meltdown.

Dude it's OK, some men just need help for their E.D. However, I just don't think this is the forum. I do wish you all the best.

Dude, THE GOOGLE knows vastly more about your demographic than you could ever hope to. You may not have erectile dysfunction now, but I would recommend getting a medical exam before it's too late.

What is a dude ranch?

Does it have anything to do with erectile dysfunction perchance?
Actually, haven't had one of those ads for a while, just the usual Native Instruments 'brostep' instruments.

A Dude Ranch is a farm where Steers are fattened or in horse racing where Geldings go to pasture. This is, I think, originally part of the Texan or thereabouts vernacular.

However "spayed" refers to de-sexing female domestic animals. So even though they were way off with species and gender... Still some major ball parkage happening.

I think, in LA, it's where old surfers go to pasture.

If she asks me what a Dude Ranch is should I shrug tell her it's a place were surfers go to chill out?
