I spent an enjoyable half-hour chuckling my way through this thread yesterday. Along the way, I couldn't help thinking to myself that none of the songs are really that bad. Not even "We Built This City..." I mean, everything has its place, right?

Then, this afternoon, I was in the car on the way home from a nearby town and what should crop up on the radio but "We Built This City..."

...

I was wrong wasn't I?

I thought I remembered that song well enough to make a fairly balanced judgement on the subject but hearing it again today for the first time in years...

Oh dear...

It really is utterly bloody awful isn't it? Utterly, utterly, utterly, unspeakably hideous in all respects.

There's a lot of really bad rock songs. There are countless dreadfully bad pop songs. Electronic music has provided us with some complete and total garbage at times. Every genre, every type of music has more than its fair share of unlistenable lemons.

Right now, following this afternoon's experience, all of them - even if you string them all together and play them on a loop - pale into insignificance next to "We Built This City..."

Whoever originally voted for that one? Yeah, well, you got it right. Totally right.

Well done sir, the previous post really says it all.

Helpful tip: If anyone doubts how ill this deal really is, it helps to watch the video. While Grace Slick strikes plasticene poses of rock guitar greatness (I don't recall ever seeing her play the guitar once since the sixties) accompanied by equally cheesy video scenes, with these lyrics ladled atop this orgy of schmaltz. Just bad on so many levels.

Somewhere in the very early pages, 10+ years ago, there was a nomination for "Sometimes When We Touch." It may not have the crass commercial awfulness of "We Built This City" or the shoeless inbred stupidity of "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo," but ya gotta at least give an Honorable Mention to a record that ends with guy hollering "Subsides!!!!!!"

"I want to hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry . .. "

These days, lyrics like that will get you on some kind of watch list.

I mean, women want men to express their feelings, buuuuuut . . . .

Yeah, and Thanks Brent for reminding me of this hemorrhoid of a song.

Like many one hit wonders this one seems to straddle the divide between very catchy and ****e. Also contains some fantastically absurd lyrics eg.

'With your carefully designed topless swimsuit
You get an even suntan
On your back and on your legs.'

The bit about stealing a painting from Picasso is also rather concerning.

Huh. Pleasant by comparison. However, gotta love the de rigueur features:

cheesy elec. piano . . .Check
antiphonal vocals . . . Check
double-cheese sax fill . . . check, check
predictably soul-ish rhythm guitar fills . . . check

Still nowhere near as awful as the afore-mentioned opus.

OH and then you go and post this. Before I publish mine. Stop it. You're not playing fair. This one actually does come up (down?) to the level of "Sometimes". . . . .

How about Paul Anka's other masterpiece One Woman Man?
As repressed memories go, this was like getting molested by the radio as a kid

Angry

.

One of the songs that is still in heavy, heavy rotation on the few classic rock stations in my area of NY

is Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again", along with any number of Billy Squire songs.

Why, Why, WHY do they have to do this to us?

George Thorogood. Was he necessary? We had Rush and Van Halen. Who wasn't being served?

That was my thought when I heard him initially as a kid.
Today I heard Who Do You Love? as a promo song behind an nfl playoff segment.

Gosh its 2017 and someone still thinks this they should use this.

I could be nicer, I know.

(Jefferson Airplane were a once revolutionary 60s act- musically and politically- who Grace Slick then ****ed over by replacing all the original members while trying to maintain rights to the band name. And all in order to please the record label's demands for a radio-friendly hit single.)

Compare and contrast.

When your song is parodied on the Simpsons it's either really good or reeeally bad.

Even by 'millennial' auto-tuned whoop-whoop standards that one's quite a stinker. Around 95 million views too. What kind of world have we become?

There's a lot of production elements I actually like, but the songwriting seems .... real bad, trying to find words. And so where they We're all at a loss for words

Some songs are so bad they're good.

You Make Me Feel Like Dancin - Leo Sayer
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - Neil Sedaka
Wildfire - Michael Martin Murphey
Billy Don't Be a Hero - Paperlace

And the grand prize:
Young Girl - Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

Word Up by Cameo certainly deserves honorable mention.

(Ice Ice Baby, Turning Japanese, My Sharona, You Light Up My Life.......)

It's a pretty limitless field.

Is it okay to ironically like "We Built This City" like one likes a really bad 80's straight to video movie? It's just so bad that it's...

Maybe I'm suffering from drain bramage now.

I actually like the prechorus ("Marconi plays the mamba" right up to where the chorus kicks in full). But verse/chorus/everything else makes me shudder!
