The End of the Internet

I've been waiting with glee for the promised time in the near future where the internet will be in the air everywhere and freely accessible by all. It's almost like that now. Internet WiFi hotspots are everywhere.

But the major phone and cable companies don't like that view of the future in the least. And they're going to try to fully monopolize and commercialize the internet making sites like Gearslutz disappear to make room for the highest bidders. Our beloved internet will be nothing more than a cybermall unless we do something about it.

Check it out...

hi rufus,
thanks for sharing this!

myself and some others have posted about this recently in gearslutz also. there still seems to be very little awareness. the good thing is nobody wants this to go into effect except the 6 or so big telecoms. (at&t, comcast etc). therefore if tons of people start calling up representatives and raising hell it should be a no brainer that this legislation goes down the tubes. the bad thing is the telecoms have lobbied very heavily lately (millions and millions of dollars) in washington and unless people actually call their reps threaten not to vote for them if they back this then it will likely
go through.

spread the word and call your reps people!!!

honestly?

what i've realized in the short time i've been around here in America..
we take so much crap from the gov. that its almost like...we are not free at all...

i put 30 dollars in my tank today...i got 10 gallons of gas...
we started a war with iraq to oust a dictator..but what should we call bush?

we let japan attack us in the 40's to get us out of the depression

and the 'only' remaining super power somehow misses the concept that planes are turning around in mid flight and heading towards the biggest city in the world..
and those buildings imploded...they where designed to take multiple hits from huge planes...**** the empire state building took a military plane hit and its still standing..

we are all engineers...those buildings didn't fall like they should have...they fell like they where rigged with explosives...what about the bombs in the van on the george washington bridge? i was in new york 2 weeks before that crazy **** happened...and i'll tell you what..

i'm pissed

now we got to fear losing the internet? comcast is already banking millions each year...and dumping millions into lobby-ing our government to do what they want..

abraham lincoln free'd the slaves to triple the work force which led into the industrial revolution...in which corporations where granted protection as 'people' under law...
before that-the 'people' where aloud to revolk a corporate charter..and dismantle them if they did not provide service as the people wished...can we do that today?
-no you get arrested for protesting today..1 night in the slammer, and prolly a good jolt from a stun gun or a baton in the head...back of the knees...

whats happening in the world?
the same **** that tore Rome in 2...greed..

so if we lose the internet...i hope people take to the streets and start looting.

1984 people...

and whats bad about it..is you have stupid people in the world who think..yea thats a good idea....

but then again..what can you do? we are all to much of individuals to stand on our own 2 feet and say no..

people forget...if it wasn't for us people the internet would be nothing...comcast and At&t would be nothing...verizon would be nothing..exxon...nothing..
but we all love to follow that mighty dollar! right?

so we'll lose the internet if corporations want to start making even more money..and we'll take it..so hey..everyone lets appriciate the days we can all sit here and bull**** and complain and give advice because-you can't be sure your going to wake up tomorrow!

hi guys,
while i share everyones pessimism on the current state of affairs i would just like to chime in and say there is a lot we can be doing about this issue. i know it seems impossible to fight the powers that be but it does make a difference when we each do a small part. people have made this country great by fighting for the things they believe in. we need to be doing the same. to stand up and make your voice heard on this issue does not require much sacrifice. below are some suggestions to get started:

1) start discussing with family, friends, and co-workers.
2) call your locals reps and complain. (raise hell!)
3) call the next day and raise hell again
4) write letters to reps
5) check out the many websites dedicating to spreading the word and see if there is any more you can do:
eg http://www.savetheinternet.com/

this is an issue we should be able to win if we do something!

I welcome the end of the internet. It is a distraction. The parallel of it's rise has coincided with the demise of the recording industry. Mediocrity reigns supreme.

The fact that you just used the internet to voice that opinion is a bit of a paradox don't you think?

Actually the internet has made it possible for me to live my dream of making music for a living. I ran a studio in Sacramento for 4 years and recently moved to Austin, TX knowing I could start up pretty quickly having access to free advertising through Craig's List and MySpace. My ability to network with real people in the recording industry is staggering.

Because of the low overhead made possible by the internet I can charge as low as $25 an hour and make a decent profit. That price makes it well within reach of local musicians. When the recording is finished they can then post their songs free on MySpace and network with people all over the world. It may be hard to get rich this way, but instead regular people are able to get their music heard by thousands of people, which is what the art is all about. That's why I make music.

To say that the internet is the demise of the recording industry is very short sighted. I believe it is in fact the cure to the dismal "Major Label/Million Dollar Studio" blues that us real musicians and artists have been waiting for for decades.

I hate to bring this up but we lost the "free" Internet years ago.

This is just a squabble over the telcos having a right to do a few of the same things the non-telco isps have been doing for a decade. The latter are fighting to retain their competitive advantage with a PR campaign. I'm no lover of ma bell but when you consider that we pay far more for internet services in the US than people in other countries do, forcing the Silicon Valley crowd to compete on an even playing field with the telcos might not be such a bad thing.

We're talking about Telcos coming UP to the level of service that's offered by Akamai. They can't legally compete with Akamai in the server business. If they could, it would probably bring what we pay for broadband down to something comparable to what Europeans pay.

what about this alex jones, i've found only this and something other about him in this forum.

yes i'm scared, he doesn't say things imaginable in a real world.
he says things that are imaginable if you plan to chose a movie for the night, but if you transport the things he says in the real world considering them true.. leaves the people without any hopes.

we should suicide ourself if we listen at him?

and the point is that what he illustrate is something that can happen, something that we have let power do in these years, for us negligence they are free to change the world as they wish telling us what they care.

what he says is all possible, but leave us without a solution.

so reality is without a solution, we are all ready to die? we don't count nothing?

he says that the major politics, media, industries, lobbies, have been bought promising the eternal life, they want to be gods, and the technology we have studied in these years (plus the technology discovered from the power, technology we don't know even exist) guarantee them control and immortality.

i'm asking myself if.. a certain kind of people know all about that but stay silent because they have promised immortality to them.

in that case the 500 million that should live is already choose between influent people, rich people, that helps the power to let us knowing nothing.

plus they have all the power and tools to treat us as a number, specially reading that the **** era, hitler, stalin, mao, etc were all experiment to study human body in deep.

Alex Jones is chicken little and the sooner you stop listening to him the sooner you will stop living in fear. You have the longest post on this thread and you offered zero viable solutions to any problems, that should be an indication of the fear you are laboring under. Seriously, do yourself a favor and stop listening to him.

Ha! Well Alex Jones makes his living by selling books and films peddling his brand of fear. It's a good business, but he has a really bad track record with his predictions...

And thank you Rufuss and electric for bringing some actual solutions to the table.
It seems like we'll be batting these telecoms away for a while to come. Every time a grassroots movement puts up a block they just come back again at a different angle. American corporate politics at it's best (worst). heh

And of course did anyone notice that it's now three years later, and neither the world nor the internet has ended? But of course that doesn't matter to prophets of doom. They know that most folks never bother to remember their incorrect predictions, they just have to keep saying something bad will happen until one of them happens to come true.

regarding the conspiracy: I was hung up on the central currency conspiracy for a long time until I helped my grand mother move her safe deposit contents to a different bank and found two car loads of coins spanning generations that I have never seen before. thousands. absolutely insane. I was put into perspective a little bit and quickly got over the idea of a possible currency change.

ok but to avoid demagogic sentences from every side.. could anyone give me a site which list the predictions done and if they have been realized or not?

or could people list me some predictions done and not true?

a lot of their prediction, or better all the conspiracy is based on dates, but could take more time because the world isn't prepared and arrive later.

plus the term now is 2012 for the third world war, and they say we are 7 billion and we will be 500 million, and you know.. is all the people except governments, banks, industry leader and maybe some actor, director, and musician for their gala.

if that's true we are all already died in a very near future.

I love how the "end of the world" keeps getting pushed back. I remember New Years Eve of 1999 and some people honestly thought the world was going to end. Now the "new" date is 2012. And wasn't Jesus supposed to make an appearance by now? Hmmm. I'm looking forward to 2012 to find out, again, when the world will come to an end.

The only thing that will end in 2012 is the marketing hype of 2012 end of the world scenarios. Buy the books and emergency kits while they last kids.

no one have replied tell me which predictions have been false or true..

btw.. obama is promoting a health care plan which is created to put a chip to every americans.. with the excuse of medical control, electronic database etc, but will be used to know where every people is.

if americans choose to use the chips of if they are forced to implant the chip.. then i think the rest of the plan of a one world government, will be possible.. and also the war because will be people against institutions..
