Gibson Offices Raided

http://www.mi-pro.co.uk/news/30687/G...acility-raided

(11/17/2009)

While no charges have yet been filed, NashvillePost.com is reporting that earlier today, Federal agents and local police seized wood, guitars, computers and files from Gibson Guitar's Massman Road manufacturing facility in Nashville.

Sources say the guitar manufacturer is being investigated for violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar.

Rosewood is widely used in the construction of guitars and sells for $5,000 per cubic meter, more than double the price of mahogany. The island nation off Africa's east coast is a key producer of the hardwood, the export of which has links to international criminal activity.

Madagascar has struggled financially since a January coup and new President Andry Rajoelina issued an executive order in September legalizing the export of rosewood and ebony. The move was decried by environmental groups and political leaders worldwide, as hardwood forests are key to Madagascar's unique ecology and serve as a habitat for a dwindling lemur population.

Sources have told NashvillePost.com that Gibson was involved in a scheme that shipped the wood from Madagascar to Germany and then to the United States.

And people scoffed at me when I told them Gibson was really behind Al Queda. Now the truth is starting to come out. I will wield my Strat in the fight for justice.

FWIW they were raided by the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Service, not the FBI. (Which is even more embarrassing IMO).

Well, we all know that the wood that the feds confiscated is already dead.

The sad part is that the wood will probably never be made into guitars.

I hope that the price of rosewood goes up so high that it's inconceivable for any guitar manufacturer to use it.
Can you imagine a Les Paul or SG with mable fretboards?
They'll look even uglier than they already do.
At least Fender guitars look good with a maple fretboard.

Or actually, I hope that Gibson buys all the rosewood and ebony it can get from the local madagascar mafia that is plundering madagascar's rainforests in marojejy national park. Then when an entire ecological system is destroyed, at least we'll know an american corporation turned some profit. dfegad

It appears that greed and shortsightedness know no boundaries.

cool atleast you know they use good wood still unlike that other big 'logo' guitar mfg.

Of course I don't know this person but a luthier that lives near me supposedly smuggled rosewood out of brazil a few years back (supposedly). He bought a chair or a couch or something down there.

Anyway he built the shipping crate out of brazilian rosewood painted it
and shipped it to the states.

brilliant

soon they'll have wood sniffing K9s

Wow. Yeah, ecological destruction and political instability are awesome as long as they make guitars out of good wood.

BTW, you're "supposed" buddy ("of course" you don't know him) that smuggled illegal wood out of brazil sounds like a "real" story. Not something to be proud of. And not really all that brilliant.

On a more serious note, please read this line carefully:

"Sources have told NashvillePost.com that Gibson was involved in a scheme that shipped the wood from Madagascar to Germany and then to the United States."

So Gibson imported the wood from Germany (according to "sources").

...And they were "involved in a scheme..."

Hmmm...

Hell, the scheme to kidnap Patty Hearst INVOLVED her father! (Doesn't mean he was complicit in the crime!)

Its a little early to make a judgment here.
