To be honest, my first "good" LDC were a Peluso 22 251 and a P12. Coming from a Rode NT-1 I had *exactly* those thoughts.

At that time I heard a shootout on this very site between a Wunder 47 and the Peluso version of it and thought that the guy was wasting money on the more expensive Wunder.

Moving on some 5 years later I upgraded to a Flea 47 and a pair of 49's. Just talking into the 47 the first time I had *exactly* those same thoughts.
And by that time I clearly heard a difference between those same files I still had from the shootout several years ago and couldn't believe it I hadn't heard the difference back then.

Shows that you evolve, that people might really have an epiphany auditioning new microphones while others might not hear the same thing.

Same thing I tell my bass students: no need to get a '64 Jazz, a $7000 Fodera or whatever at that level if they don't know what to expect.

(paraphrasing)

"The TLM 103 is basically a re-boxed U87 without the additional polar patterns, pad or roll-off switch"

I'm still checking it out, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I hear it's really good on female vocals.

Immediate sound.
Very capable
Character of more expensive mics
Tames digital harshness
Flattering yet neutral
Retro sound quality
Airy (what's that?)
Edgy modern tone (Harsh sounding?)
Sits just right in a mix (which one?)
Transparent (still haven't quite figured out what that is. Do mics sound "opaque?")
Smooth (Same thing. What if the source is harsh?)

1. Forcing me to think about the word shrill without explicit audio examples.

2. Quote: "my new go-to"

Any mention of hammering a nail*.

The best microphone ever! (especially when the same reviewer says that about all the microphones he tests.)

Sounds incredible! ("what sounds Incredible" the microphone or the people who are singing/playing into it?)

Nice bottom end (compared to what and on what material?)

I am buying this for my mic locker ( The mic manufacture has given him the mic or a BIG discount in return for a nice review.)

Classic Sound (Sounds like a 44BX, a 77DX or Shure microphone from the 1950s)

Works well on all recordings (Impossible)

WOW!

I also love it when the reviewer says the microphone is flat from DC to light and the frequency plot shows extreme fall offs at the low and high frequencies.

FWIW

… and so on...
Y'all need some perspective. Some compared-to-what.

This weekend on US AM radio, take a listen to "Car Pro" with Jerry Reynolds. He's a silver-tongued, downhome good ol' boy who takes Bootlicking Sycophant to a whole new level. He lives in a world where there are no bad cars and we're just spoiled for choice, everyone can afford a new one, and the nicest people in the world are at auto dealerships where they'll take real good care of you.
