One of the greats IMO. I love his songwriting.

Although Esther Phillips cover of Home Is Where The Hatred Is >>> the original (which is still very good).

i was really interested how he would sound like in 2009/2010. today i finally heard his single me and the devil. i was REALLY impressed by the way of the production!! was it him with who drove the production (sounds) into this way??? reminds me a little bit of massive attack and such artists.

YouTube - Gil Scott-Heron - "Me And The Devil" **OFFICIAL HD VIDEO**

but what i also recognized was the mixing...the voice seems behind the instrumental. some elements like those crackles (glas/metal?) which occur sometimes are too loud, overall the mix doesn´t sound good. maybe he did it on his own? well, his stuff in the 70ies was very ruff and so the mixing, but the instruments weren´t the same and it did sound organic. not to say this doesn´t but the mixing is much more important when mixing that kind of music with a lot going on instead of drums/perc, 1 or two other elements and a voice in his 70ies tracks....

i love the first synth which is playing from the beginning to the end which you can hear clearly in the beginning and end when everything else is muted. nice somehow typical for scott heron sound i thought...

i will buy the album AND i like that song!! but i would like it even more if it was mixed better. he isn´t the geatest singer but his music is art....as is his new video which i love!!!!! well maybe the reason for mixing the voice that much in the background is the result of knowing just that...

Me and the Devil

Stunning..
From the very first word....... "Early" the vox are potent.
He,s still a great great poet.... Gill Scott-Heron added these lyrics at the end.

'Standing in the ruins of another black mans life
or flying thru the valley separating day from night
I am Death cried the vulture for the poeple of light
Kieron (sic) brought his raft from the sea that sails on souls
and saw the scavenger departing taking warm hearts to the cold
he knew the Ghetto was a haven for the meanest creature ever known
in a wilderness of heartbreak in a desert of despair
Evils clarion of justice shreiks a cry of naked terror
taking babies from their mommas leaving grief beyond compare
so if you see the vulture coming flying circles in your mind
remember there is no escaping for he will follow close behind
only promise me a battle... battle for your soul and mine
your soul and mine.

Gonna have to give it a couple of more listens to get the sonics.

That sounds absolutely terrible. Nothing sits in the mix at all. Not that I value production over musical content, but if the rest of the album sounds that way, I won't be buying it - production that bad distracts me from the music, that's just the way I hear it...
