10oz or 12oz Hessian/Burlap for Sound Absorbing Cubes/Panels??

Hi

I ordered 12oz Hessian/Burlap for my DIY Sound Absorbing Cubes, but they sent me 10oz.

I am going to try an experiment. I want a stackable system so I am going to create wire mesh cages that are filled with rockwool and covered in hessian/burlap.

Is 10oz good at containing the dust fibres and visually hiding the slab?

Has anyone doubled up 10oz to make sure?

Is 12oz significantly less acoustically transparent? Or much better at catching fibres?

Thanks in advance.

Unless the weave is tighter or looser, there should be a negligible difference between the two.

Doubling up will reflect more highs, generally speaking.

Is either fire rated?

Hi

Yes the 12oz has a tighter weave.

10oz looks a bit gappy.

Thanks for the reply.

Nope, but it is in my own personal studio, which does have fireproof walls and a fire rated cieling plasterboard.

Thanks for the reply

The internet seems to be quite divided about how dangerous the fibres are. ...hmm.

My solution to fill my wire cages:

I am going to have a 100mm front of acoustic wool insulation (sheeps wool - not toxic), 31kg/m3, which will act as a filter and do a better job of absorbing the high frequencies.

Then 350mm of 45kg/m3 rockwool/rocksilk.

I wil spray the exposed rockwool faces with pva/water to seal the fibres.

Cover in 10oz hessian which will be a bit gappy - will be very acoustically neutral - if it gets on my nerves I will wrap another layer or replace with the 12oz.

It should be an interesting experiment - a reasonably straight absorbtion curve, as opposed to one with a lot of dips/troughs - no wood back or enclosure to resonate.

Thanks
