French Cleat Strip DIY For Mounting Panels: Flexibility

I'm building a bunch of absorption panels and I'm starting to think about the different ways to mount them to the walls. These panels are thick so they don't require an air space in the back.

Something came to me, and perhaps this isn't original or new. But what about making french cleat strips, out of wood (3/4 inch thickness), which isn't very difficult if you have access to a table saw that does 45 degree angles. These strips can be installed around the entire perimeter of the room, or at least, in large sections of the room. That would give a ton of flexibility when moving the panels around without having to worry about remounting the hardware to the wall if a mistake was made.

The set back is the wood will be visible in areas where there are no panels, but the strips can be painted or stained, and maybe it would end up looking pretty cool, like a chair rail.

Seems like a fairly easy installation with a level and fastening into studs around the entire room.

Years ago I had a massive cassette rack that I mounted using what I later learned was called the French cleat method. One thing that helped me was that my piece of wood had a knot in it and it caused my cut to have a little knotch, which worked in my favour as I could remount the rack and locate the knotch and know it was perfectly lined up.

If it appeals to you then do it; it is a great and invisible method.

I like your idea. It gives you a ton of flexibility to add, subtract and move things around. Great idea IMHO.
