Where does caulk go? Looking for complete instructions to hand to a contractor

Hello,

I've never hung drywall before and would be hiring a contractor for my job.

People keep saying to use acoustic caulk, but I'm just not sure of where it's supposed to go. "Every seam." Ok, Does that mean caulking every seam between the drywall sheets or will the drywall mud seal that and the seams are really just around the floors and ceilings?

The diagrams in Rods book do a great job of identifying the raw materials except for where caulk should go when building things like windows and doors.

I'm looking for complete set of build instructions I can provide and review with the contractor. Should my instructions be: 'Anywhere you normally caulk when hanging drywall, doors, or installing windows just replace it with this acoustic caulk?' Or is it more than that?

Any help on what I should outline for a contractor on techniques/materials for hanging drywall are appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Also around any penetrations in the room. Seal all gaps. The room should be airtight. Putty pads backing gang boxes, etc...

USG has a free construction manual with caulking details. Anywhere rods book reccomends is where to do it around the drywall. Seal any other penetrations in the wall.

Non hardening silicone caulking, and butyl caulking are fine. "Acoustic Caulking" offers no advantage.

Keep in mind some areas/codes require fire caulking, like pipe penetrations between floors for example.
