Defying Bad Room Acoustics

A question for the engineers: I have a pretty bad sounding room, have put some bass traps etc but the room still sounds like crap. That said, I have some decent adam monitors and mix back and forth with the monitors and one or two good headphones so I can understand whats going on better in the mix. When I put the volume down on the monitors and listen close to them, I can get a better (dryer) idea of whats going on in the mix before the sound goes everywhere, instead of leaning back in my chair and being hit by some godawful nodes while trying to eq properly. My question fro the pros is: is this something that you would recommend in my situation? Ive been doing it and it kinda works. The mix sounds way better when I move in closer. Then I check it in the car and on other speakers and it sounds relatively on point with what I intended... Thanks for any help!
