Leo Beranek died yesterday, Oct. 11 2016, at 102 years of age. A legend in the field, he pioneered many of things we take for granted in acoustics today. His firm, BBN (Bolt, Berankek, and Newman) lives on today as a part of Raytheon. I was fortunate to meet him on a couple of occasions and he was kind, gracious and wonderful to talk to. He will be missed.
I think I have four of his books on my bookshelf. In addition to acoustics, BBN did some other interesting stuff. They once sold a high-speed computing engine for doing FFT's. They named it, appropriately enough the Butterfly. Mr. Beranek gave a well-attended keynote address at AES a few years ago.
