Cubase Studio 4 problem with Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz (the silver, not the unibody) with Snow Leopard and an RME Fireface 400 interface.
Lately, I have installed Cubase Studio 4 (version 4.0.2) and ran
into this problem:

Cubase Studio 4.0.2 uses a strange font for any user-editable text and
some fixed text. It is almost not readable for me and annoying.
I have discovered that updating to 4.5.2 solves this problem but
adds another problem: With this version you can't change the audio buffer
size from within cubase studio anymore. And the RME FF400 control panel
doesn't allow for this either! Looks like a catch 22 for me .

I couldn't find any usable info on this specific problem on the net.
Has anyone met a solution to this problem yet?

p.s. ugrading cubase studio 4 to Cubase 4 or 5 isn't an option for me now

I just wanted to ask if you've tried to change the buffer before you run cubase (or anything other program that might use your soundcard). Also in cubase you can click on (and im paraphrasing here) control panel? I know thats where cubase gives access to the the buffer.

I'll repost when I check on Cubase later today.

Thanks for responding.
The thing is that RME FF400 software doesn't have a way to adjust buffer size in any way.
Now that in cubase 4.5 that is also impossible, you see my problem ?!
Clicking on 'control panel' would only get me back to the RME software.

best regards,
