Cubase 10.5: External Instruments with daisy chained MIDI

In Cubase 10.5 is it possible to have more than one synth set up as an external instrument on the same MIDI port using a different channel?

My Googling tells me this isn't possible which, if so, is frankly mindblowing given I'm able to freeze and render in place a hardware track () and yet not able to utilise multiple MIDI channels.

To clarify, let's say I have 16 synths, do I need 16 dedicated MIDI outputs or will one output and 16 channels work?

In MIDI Device Manager I'm only able to select the MIDI interface and not a speciic channel which kinda tells me my suspicions are correct.

A MIDI device is connected to a port.
A midi track can be send to any port on any channel.

Thanks, but did you read the question?

Referring to the attached, where do I select channel 2 on each of the MIDI interfaces listed on the dropdown?

You don't (in devices) but in the midi track.

I don't think you use the External Instrument functionality in Cubase do you?

That’s not using External Instruments* as a function of Cubase just the standard MIDI functionality of every DAW.

Let me phrase it like this: can you select your hardware synths from your VST Instrument list? Can you freeze them and render with one click?

*Notice how External Instruments is capitalised. This isn’t by accident.

And even if the answer is yes you’re still only selecting a different MIDI channel of the Korg whereas I want to select the next synth in the MIDI daisy chain.

You can select your hardware synth (you made in MIDI Devices and configurated in Audio Connections) from the external instruments list.

Your External Instrument will output audio.
To "Freeze" (in one click) you will need to do this in "real time".

If they don't share the same channel (only the same port, with MIDI through) that's no problem.

Nope. If I hit my key-command hotkey R it renders my hardware synths to audio without the need to manually record. Same with freeze. Obviously behind the scenes it’s doing it real-time but I’m not recording it.

Also reiterate the hardware synths are shown in the VST Instrument list.

Anybody have any further thoughts on my initial question?

Sorry, Mushy, but BT64 is right, providing that you use the 'Pro' version, as 'External Instruments/FX' features are only availlable in this one, AFAIK.

FWIW, here is my setup. Actually, all my external synths are connected to my DAW via one of the two MIDI available outputs of my Fireface UCX, the messages being physically dispatched to the relevent unit, via an old Akai ME30P MIDI patchbay. So, and to answer your question, you can see that all three instruments use the same MIDI port but with different MIDI channels...

(sorry for the reduced size of the image : the actual one is 349 kB, but when uploaded it is only 106. Go figure...)

Thanks cubic13. BT64 and I discussed this further on another thread and indeed it was a brainfart at my end. I thanked him there but worthwhile apologising to him here also.

Essentially I assumed (wrongly) that once I select an interface in the MIDI device manager window that it disappears from that list (ie, that it can only be applied once).

Thanks both for correcting me. This means that instead of needing 20 to 30 discrete MIDI outputs I'll be able to use a single 8 channel MIDI interface. It's night and day in terms of budget.
