Let't say you are still a indie band, that plays live instruments + backing tracks and you get the change to play at some festivals around the world, so you're thinking to prepare the light show too.

What software would be the best to do this? to prepare the light show for each individual song and make sure that's in sync with the clock, so when the song starts, the light show starts too.

What hardware do you need to be able to connect to any kind of light stage system that you find on the whole different stages you're going through?

The software "Qlab" on a macbook with a DMX dongle will probably get you going.

Working lighting engineer here.I have a few questions that could help specify exactly the scope of what you’re planning. Hopefully I can provide some advice.

- Will you bring your own lamps, or will you rely on the lighting rig provided by the festivals?
- Do you have a dedicated person (light tech) with you, or would the lighting be sorted by the band members?
- Do you have prior experience programming lights or is this a first?
- What size festivals/venues do you expect to be playing?

I do not have experience using Qlab for lighting control, but it can supposedly output Art-Net, which is the most used lighting control protocol for large scale lighting control. As such it may be an option, but Qlab can be quite difficult when moving from one lighting system to another.
