My favorite part of these sessions..... just no rehearsal > play for 4-6 minutes. Rest & then on to the next jam.. Way different > every time I hit record on the Roland. Gather for 3/4 days >> mix and make a CD.

Yeh it is, I had a feeling the drums might be a tad far, tkx for that. Will change that.

Hi, here is my finished track. It is recorded live, vocals are overdubbed. Everything was recorded analog.

Good stuff though, like the other stuff I've heard from you in the past.
Thanks for listening. I toyed with the vocal because IMO, this was a kind of throw away fun song. Not that it is even in the same league with it, but I kind of approached it like Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Very tongue in cheek. The subject matter made it easy for me to work with my voice from a different character perspective. Tom Jones?? Hmm. I'll have to think about that one. lol

Tried out a new tune locally, recorded off a Presonus board into Cubase. Hardest tune we've ever performed and still working on some crazy timing! Mostly Shure SM57s.
Lead vocal overdubbed with Blue Stage 2/B8 mic. Nebula AlexB MFC console.

Sounds good. I might like to also hear it without the reverb. It's such a nice ditty, and the accoustic guitars are so clear and realistic sounding, that a dryer sound might give it a more intimate feel. I mean, it's just my personal taste, but hearing lots of fret noise through reverb has never really been my thing.

Still I really like this, it's a very honest cover and captures the spirit of that piece with aplomb!

Any opinions or production advice?

Thanks in advance,

I dig this song a lot. Great use of metaphor/symbolism. It made me think of mortality.

The mix works pretty well as-is, but if I had to offer constructive advice, I'd say that you might experiment with having it build to a bit more of a crescendo at the end by ramping up the intensity of the vocals on the last chorus. You could also try maybe adding a bit of a guitar solo after that final chorus but before the denoument with strings at the end.

But if that's just not your style, I think it works pretty well as-is.

Keyboardist here...

I don't think the vocals are too loud. I think it's that the keyboard part may need the right hand to come down an octave and maybe move the left hand down two octaves. Right now the keys and guitar seem to occupy the same higher spectral territory while the middle range feels kind of empty. This may be what's causing it to feel "hollow" or like it's missing something.

If you do that but find the vocals are now competing too much with the keys, one trick is to have the right hand of the keys simplify or lay out while the vocals are going. You can also use a lowpass filter or EQ on the keys that pot down the mids while the vocalist is singing—but I would prolly avoid high resonance on the filter if you do that, esp. since it's an organ.

Thanks a lot for the support and advice, and food for thought; I appreciate it. I agree that musically it would probably benefit from more intensity in the vocals towards the end, but then again the mood is quite resigned so it might not suit the meaning. I'll ponder it. The lead guitar I currently have after the final chorus and before the strings is about as lead as I go! Were you thinking of something rougher?

Anyway, thanks again.

Im very sorry , i posted this in the "rough demos " thread and then realized that ive made a mistake and that these are more "finished " demos

Here are two versions of the same song

I played everything on both demos and most of the instrumetn and vocal perfomances are weak .
But i struggle to understand what i should do about it all. Any advices are welcome !
i have another version wich is more psychedelic. The first chorus stays calm , with the marching drums instead to go to a straight beat . But anyways ...

I'm no pro, but a few thoughts for what it's worth. Listened to V2, which I just preferred to V1 as it felt more "deliberate" if that means anything haha.

It's a damn cool song, love the style. It has an off-tune "lazy" style to it and the mix of instruments work to my ear.

Vocals a little low in the mix initially. I think it's a cool vocal so I wouldn't be afraid to turn it up a bit at the start.

When it kicks in the vocal also a bit drowned in places. Not sure if you use EQ to separate them out, or adjust volumes.

Howdy all,

I posted these over in the rough demo forum but didn't realize a finished demo thread was here!

Here's two "finished" songs I've been working on. Any feedback would be great, everyone keeps saying it sounds like Pink Floyd! Ha!

All live instruments but tracked individually except drums and bass.

I like the mixing of the instruments and how the vocals sit inside the mix rather than sounding out of place and demo-ish. Full without sounding crowded.

Here's a recreation of some synth pop that caught my interest - Don't Go by Yazoo. The idea was basically to try to get the approximation of the song's sound with some free synths. I used a couple instances of Superwave P8 and a couple of Synth 1. Also a mixing demo of sorts. Feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Very cool tune!

I seem to have missed the first offering but I surely do like this production. It has a Steely Dan feel to it.

Happy to be releasing this. Wondering if the slutz notice anything sticking out it that I should correct.

Thanks so much! I finally learned the lesson that "less can be more". Recorded a lot of original tunes over the past couple years, several way too "pop" and overproduced just to pay the bills.

Currently going back to all of them and taking out unnecessary tracks, lowering reverb levels, most of which just disguise the tune.

My comment is simple - Great work! Really enjoyed the keyboard and vocal performances. All the different mood changes are spot on! It all works for me.
