Ah yeah that's right, I forgot about that. Anyway, thanks for the listen and the words. I agree.

You know, for you, you should just sing yourself and not use the robots. You're taking a lot of flack for them. Sing yourself or just find a friend or an online collab.

As I said, I cannot sing anymore, have no friends who can sing and don't have the money to hire a singer.

So that's that.

Well you've got a CD going to Broadway, so that's pretty good.

Here for the gear

Hi all, I've been writing with a diva rock guy friend and he's giving me a lot of drama lately... This is the stuff we've done so far... Jusy trying to decide if I should fight for my melodies/lyrics or let it go and move on with my life- I know I'm being vague... He played the guitar, I guided him through it- he came up with riffs here and there so I guess he gets writing credits for the composition??

Anyway, click the link, only two songs have vocals- download the individual songs and tell me your thoughts.

Thanks.

My 2 cents

1964 and What I Need

Pleasant enough. Nice vocalist. Nice clean recording. Easy to listen to. No strong hook so ultimately they're just another pretty face in a huge crowd if you're looking at these from a commercial aspect. If you're looking at them from an artistic aspect, they're nice. More of today's music should be this pleasant to listen to.

Better Than Nothing

Nice foundation. Certainly something there to work with.

Bottom Line: This is nice music but nothing that's going to become a "hit" if that's what you're looking for.

I could see that avatar of yours up in lights all down 42nd street. Those synthetic eyes peering down expressionlessly, an eerie prelude to the creepy, sterilized vocalizations to come.

Haha...I kid, man.

Thanks for the response!! I knew these weren't hits when I wrote them, but it did feel good to work with someone who makes me write something different than what I'm used to. They are more artistic than commercial so I completely agree with you on those notes but I ain't mad at them either. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and critique.

For anybody interested, this is the overture from "Once Upon A Time." It has no vocals to cringe at so it's relatively safe to listen to.

Thank you all again for coming and don't forget to tip your waitress.

So that's that.
Is it that you don't WANT a singer? Or you can't find one? I'll accept the fact that you don't want a singer...but saying you can't find a singer is suspect...

Please read what I said. Don't have the money to hire a singer. None of my friends sing. And nobody is going to come down here out of the goodness of their heart and learn and sing 16 songs for a Broadway musical. Oh wait, and then there are 4 duets. So I need a guy for that too. And then my home has no acoustics. So we'd have to go into a studio. That costs money that I don't have. Imagine studio time for 16 tracks.

No, hiring, getting, or begging for a singer is not an option if for no other reason than the cost.

So can we please drop this now?

Reading back some in this thread, I've been dismayed to see some fairly nasty criticism of some of the mixes and songwriting. Honestly, this should not be. You may not like someones music but that's your opinion. Lot's of great songs have been written with 2 chords and repetition. Think Lou Reed or blues riffs. If you have something to add in a positive vein about the mix, by all means do it. But egos are fragile, especially with someone who 's genuinely looking for help. Telling them their stuff is crap is really off base an cruel, especially considering none of us here are pros. That's for the "finished mix" thread. Keep it light, we're here to help each other, not pretend we're the arbiters of good or bad music.

It makes me angry to see someone slamming someone with something to offer, because they have an inflated idea of their songwriting superiority. Not what this is about, and a real turn off.

I'm not exactly sure who you're referring to. I do know I try to be constructive, but honest, with all my comments.

The reality is this, and take it for what it's worth to you. There's no point in coming here, posting your song, and have everybody come back with a "Hey man, that's really great. Keep up the good work." If we're here to get patted on the back, then we might as well not be here at all.

When I post a song I want to know what people really think. Not what I want to hear. In a way, all the negative remarks I got were in fact, encouraging. Most complaints were about the synthesized vocals but I don't think one person actually criticized the music. That actually means a lot to me.

One of the things I hate about the business, when I used to submit songs to publishers, is the only responses I'd get back were "Not what we're looking for" especially when I submitted the exact style of music they said they wanted in their advertisement. Why couldn't they just write back to me, be honest, and tell me what they didn't like about my song so that I could, oh I don't know, maybe improve it.

All this politically correct BS doesn't help anybody improve as a writer or anything for that matter. At least when I tell somebody that I think their song was kick ass, you know I really mean it. Doesn't mean my opinion is as valid as an A&R guy, but given that I've been hammering away at this business for over 30 years, maybe I at least have a clue what might just make it.

But whatever. It's all pretty much moot anyway in this forum. Very few members here post any comments anyway. I think out of the 20 songs I've posted here I've had maybe a half dozen comments. Nobody cares about anybody but themselves. That's just the way life is. And I don't have a problem with pointing that out either, which is why I've at least tried to comment on every track that's been posted here in the last few months.

Of course if all these writers would just prefer that I was silent too, hell, I can do that. It's no skin off my nose. And then we can just close down this sub forum altogether when the only thing going on is members posting tracks and nobody listening to them.

My 2 cents for whatever the bloody hell they're worth.

I've listened to almost every track that's been posted, but since June you've tended to moderate and steer the entire forum, i.e. your 'I'm done here, so we can just close the sub-forum down now' attitude.

There was a reason that Oscar Madison was the antagonist. One would think that your realisation of that fact would take you to the next logical step.

Please, that's a cop out answer. Whether or not I'm here, that shouldn't stop person A from commenting on person B's music while ignoring person C (me)

But no. The last 5 or 6 people to post tracks here have gotten comments from one person, me. So where is everybody else? Hell, where are the people posting tracks commenting on each other's tracks? It's my fault that they don't?

That's BS and you know it.

The truth is, this sub forum is dead and I wasn't the one who killed it. I post my tracks. I comment on other members tracks...the way it's supposed to work. And if everybody here who posted tracks did that, this sub forum would be amazing.

Hell. I've commented on tracks here where the person didn't even have the decency to come back and say thank you for listening, like they didn't even give a crap to begin with.

So please, don't go blaming the state of this sub forum, which is essentially on life support, on me.

It is NOT my fault.

Finally got a couple finished

Here's a couple of songs I've recorded over the past couple of months while learning to record in the digital realm in my new home studio. I've been writing complete songs only for a few months, but I've been playing guitar for fifty years! I hope you enjoy them. I'd like your opinion. - John

Side Effects is a great tune. You nailed the surf guitar. Kinda sounds like Lou Reid meets X vocals. My (female) cousin and I were laughing our collective asses off. The 'chorus' lines are priceless.
