I can tell you what does not work..calling up
a string sound and playing chords on it like you
would with an organ sound.

Listen to any orchestra..none of the players
are playing “chords”. Every player is playing
single lines. The chords come from individual
players doing separate lines.

There are four sections of strings..basses, cellos,
violas, and violins. Basses on the low notes, cellos
on the low midrange, violas on the upper midrange, violins in the high range. Google “note
range of the violin”, you’ll get the range of
notes the violin can play. Do the same for
the note ranges of the viola, cello, and bass
(also called contrabass, and also double bass).

Orchestration is a heavy subject that takes years
to learn. But you have to start somewhere.
The most important thing is to learn that
it is a combination of players all playing separate
parts that make up the whole.
