Legalities using part of a nursery rhyme in the lyrics

I've been mucking around with a tune and for some reason a nursery rhyme popped into my head. It was very disturbing, but I went along with it nonetheless.

So, what are the legalities using parts of a nursery rhyme in your lyrics?

How far can you go?

Nursery rhymes are all public domain,
no copyrights involved. Steal away..

All songs that are initially recorded or published in the US prior to January 1, 1923 are considered to be in the public domain. So unless it was written after that, you're fine. That's how far you can go. That probably includes almost all of the ones we're all familiar with, though not necessarily all.

Thanks for the heads-up bill5.

According to the Public Domain lists I could find online, the three songs I had in mind were initially recorded or published in the early 1800's, so I guess I should be fine then.
