Articulations in vocal music

I know that's a dumb question but I was never working with vocals before... What kind of articulations should I use. I'd make a separate synth representation for each "type" of vocal instead of writing specific markings in sheet music, I'm working on MIDI only. I want to write renaissance-style religious polyphonic music and pop music, specifically. I know I can just look at sheets of my favorite songs but I want to ask what articulations you use, is there some kind of a standard?
