How to write a 90s R&B ballad?

Something like Jodeci's "Im still waiting" or "forever my lady"

If I were to just guess(maybe), it sounds like you got a request for film...? I got one once for a "part 2" of sorts of an old famous motorcycle movie. It wasn`t real popular, but they wanted 70`s type tracks with a 70`s sound. It was VERY difficult to come up with something of the "Born to be Wild" type that wasn`t. Finally found a studio that fit(complete with AKG BX20 spring reverb..WTF!!) and it worked.

Remember that in the 90s, R&B was POP music. Big melodies and hooks, LOVE and respect were key topics, there were GROUPS, so lots of harmonies. The vocals were soaring, lots of runs and they expressed emotion. The lyrics expressed vulnerability, care, promises to be be better, apologizing for doing wrong. This is all very different from R&B today. Some Adult urban contemporary hits still bring this vibe though.

Over the past year, half of what I've been writing are 90s R&B tunes and these are some of the things I think embody these records.
