Hi pass filter cutoff frequency

When hi passing a source to clear up the low end, where you know the lowest fundamnetal (for instance a Tom whose fundamental is at 120hz), do you set the cutoff right on the fundamental, and then increase the resonance so the fundamnetal is strong? Or do you hi pass below it? If so by how much? The hi pass filter of TDR Slick EQ GE has a feature where it provides a bump an octave above the cutoff frequency, so perhaps it's better to high pass that 120hz Tom at 60hz, with a small bump at 120? Just wondering where it's best to set cutoffs on high pass filters when you know the lowest fundamental. Also for example, bass guitar in the key of E where the lowest note is 41hz. High pass at 40 with resonance? Lower?

I know to use my ears but looking for general guidelines and if a specific method works best.

Thanks.

If you use a resonant filter and want to boost the fundamental, set the cutoff at that frequency.
When having multiple mics on the same source, you have to keep in mind that HPF alters the phase a lot, so if there is nothing to clean, it might be better to leave it alone or use a lower cutoff frequency.
