Tascam MS16 owners, please advise.

I've read these forums often but finally joined for some advice.

Purchased a Tascam MS16. Save your opinions, thanks, I've made a couple records on this machine and I'm into it, so I grabbed one when it became available in my area.

My machine came with five pieces: the machine itself, the module with the meters on the front and all the I/O in back, two DBX units, and a remote. Did not come in the Tascam trolley.

This is a picture from the internet showing the pieces my machine came with (I'm on the other side of the country or would take a pic of my own machine)(pic doesn't show remote):

Now here is a standard catalogue pic of the machine in its trolley. Note the unit with the blank front panel above the DBX units:

Here is a another picture showing that blank panel above the DBX opened to reveal the (amplifier?) cards where, presumably, one would find trimpots used to calibrate the machine:

There is more than one example online of people running the machine without this module with the blank front panel. My question: Is this module integral to the operation of the machine? Can it be used without it? Can you explain how and why?

Thanks kindly in advance for your input!

Hi there - I'm not certain but I think the cards are behind the VU meters on your version. Think there were quite a few variations. If you take the VU meter panel off you should be able to tell and I think thats how you calibrate your machine. Cheers
