Which compressor to finish this vocal chain? U87ai->EZ1073->Compressor

Im looking for a compressor to add to my vocal chain.
Ive ton of plugins so Im looking for something which does a better job than a plugin.

Here you can hear my voice through a 20 dollar Art preamp.

I was thinking of a
-FMR RNC or anything other FMR
-DBX 160x/a
-ART PRO VLA II
-GAP Comp54
-1176 by Warm Audio or Hairball Audio
-Distressor
-Your suggestion(s)

Im not a pro, so it takes a while before I have the cash for a Distressor, so maybe there is something more affordable to get the job done

For my money there's nothing to beat an 1176

Well, what's the sound you're after? Those compressors you listed are a variety of flavors. Though Distressors are the most versatile out of all you listed. And will very well stay in your rack for the future years. I would rather wait and save for that.

Inward connections The Brute is a fantastic vocal compressor.

I have a RNC & in reference to your post, I am not sure it is actually much better than a good compressor plugin.

On the FMR front the PBC6A is a nice colored compressor, but it may not be a color you enjoy, it's pretty meaty & aggressive. I used to track a lot of vocals through it but since I got the Brute the PBC mostly sees guitar tracking duty.

Then get the WARM. An 1176 and LA2A are staples and always make great first compressors. 1176 sound friggin great with a U87 too!

For bass PBC6A is awesome. After that I also love the Kenetek 1176ln.

+1 on the Brute, though it can make a bright mic like the u87 even brighter... id also consider a UA LA-3a reissue, or a dbx 165a with peak-stop removed... or Retro Sta-Level, or 176.

We have a WA76 and I never track vocals without it. Amazing value as well. Distressors are incredible but way more complex to dial in and a lot more dough. If you need something you can use on drums too though...no contest, get the Distressor

Not surprising since this is gs; but I have (or in the case of the distressor and fmr; had) and use all the comps mentioned. Of them the hairball and wa76 get used the most but the 160's and vla are thrown in the mix regularly enough. I regret selling my distressors but not the fmr. If I had only one to pick from it would be a wa76 or the hairball. Especially following a neve type pre. Golden.
