Professional Arranger?

This may be a dumb question, but does anyone have experience using a professional arranger for non-orchestral work? What I mean is, not for a big string arrangement or horn section arrangement.

What if you have an artist who sends you a demo consisting of a lone vocal and an acoustic guitar and wants an interpretation of those songs with a full band in kind of a blues-country style? Is it generally overkill in that situation to get the input of someone who is as fluent in theory, chord voicings, harmony, etc. as a professional arranger would be?

Of course, a decent producer is going to have some of these skills as well, as will the musicians providing the backing tracks, but does anyone have experience bringing someone in who mostly arranges rather than mostly produces to a project like that?

Is it overkill, or might it take it to the next level?
