Best character mics for drum ambience

Please recommend some non neutral mics to add fatness and ambience. The u87 is cool but towards the high end of my budget.

I like ribbons for this.

AEA R84 is excellent. Round low end and smooth mids. The AEA R92 and N22 will do a great job too, overall a little less thick than the R84. It's easy to dial in a little 50-100hz on these (depending on what you are doing production-wise and the kck drum's relationship to the bass), they take eq well IME.

I'm planning to use it to mic an adjacent room to add depth to the drum kit.

Agree with Nathan on the R84s. I use them around the kit all the time. That said, I wouldn't call them "non-neutral". I have many other mics I'd consider not as neutral. Some people would call the R84s relatively dark, but very smooth and can take EQ very well.
