Connecting a mixer to an interface wiring...

I posted this in another thread so sorry for the repeat, but I'm seriously confused. I have an 888|24 interface and I want to connect it to my mixer. Here's what the 888|24 manual says:

Quote:
If you are connecting a balanced system, pin
1 and shield should be connected at the input
only (not at the output). This will prevent
ground loops between the shield and
pin 1 conductor.

If you are connecting an unbalanced signal
to the 888|24 I/O inputs or outputs, connect
only pin 2 to the “+” signal, and pins 1 and
3 to ground at all inputs only.

The first paragraph seems like it's saying to leave the ground unsoldered only for the input jacks to avoid ground loops. For balanced gear, can't I just use normal XLR/TRS cables instead of having to rewire it like that?

The 2nd paragraph seems like it's saying to wire the ground and negative together for the input jacks only which would make the ground from an unbalanced piece go to the negative of the XLR input on the 888|24.

I'm confused on both of these. It doesn't say how the other end of the cable is supposed to be wired, and I'm not certain that when they say 'inputs' that they're talking about the input JACKS on the 888|24, or inputs on both the 888|24 and the gear that's connected to it.

Before I start soldering I want to make sure I know how to wire this since I don't want to blow anything up.

I'm a little dense with this so if someone can put this into plain English for me, I'd appreciate it.
