Brendan O'brien snare sound???

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how Brendan O'Brien get's that amazing kind of exploding snare sound that you hear in choruses of so many of his productions.

Obviously he's not the only one doing it, but his consistancy in getting organic but powerful soundz is inspiring to me (any many others I'm sure).

1. Is it gating and triggering the room from the snare?
2. Using reverb on samples or mults of the real snare?
3. Is it better to track in a large room or smaller mid size room to get this sound? If the room is to large do I loose power with the snare sound?

Do a search. There was recently a thread about Brendan O'Brien/Nick Didia and the drum sounds they get.
