Does SBM pass through the Sony PCM-R500?

Hi all,

I own an older Sony DAT deck, the PCM-R500 that has SBM encoding.

Question:

- does SBM encoded audio pass through the analog, and/or digital, outputs at the same time it is actually recording?

- does a tape actually need to be in the transport in order for SBM to work? or, can the transport just be set to 'Source'?

It's a great old machine..... I'd like to get more use out of it!

I believe that the SBM is in how it encodes analog to digital. The digital out will have it. But why use a 16 bit DAT as a D/A. when even simple inexpensive interfaces may have better 24 bit convertors?

I have a number of professional DAT decks around, but only use them to play DATs. I wouldn't think of using them as input device or A/D! I might use the nincer Sony 2300 for its meters, but hardly worth the space it takes up... No SBM in the pro DATs.
