Apogee quartet expansion i/o

i need a help because I need more connections (I/O) to connect a external hardware for a apogee quartet. I am using the quartet with a 5.1 configuration, the quartet only have 6 outputs.
I am thinking in 2 options, but I am not sure if it will work. I am using a pro tools 10

first idea:
use a digi 96 I/O to the optical input of the quartet

second idea:
use a digi 002 as a second interface, or another idea is to use the digi 002 to the quartet's optical input

It will work?
Cheers

Do you have both of these interfaces on hand? If so I would try it, otherwise, I would go for another option. A used Rosetta 800 comes to mind.

Lives for gear

Neither of those interfaces will work in this scenario, as neither of them have standalone converter functionality.

I would get something like the Focusrite Octopre.
