I got 4 old Sennheiser MD 421 along with some prominent Beyerdynamics as a gift about ten years ago from a guy I used to write software for, who did the audio for live events long long ago and still had all these mics lying around. Tried some with a mini Tuchel (DIN) plug and wasn't overwhelmed. One of them looked nearly untouched but had a big Tuchel plug and not the filter unit. Got a cable today and tried it through a UA 610 MKII and a Tonebeast/WA76/Klark LA2A chain.
Just after missing last month Sennheiser Deal offering the MKII of the 421 for 200,- I finally decided to order the adapter for 30,- Euros. Call me impressed!

Week ago - Flea 47 tube mic, this week - Goodfly U47 tube mic.
Female vocals, pretty different, but both times mics was 50cm away from singer.

I do liked both, but i’d like to compare them at the same studio, or at least on the same vocal.

But i’m not a mic maniac, if it works good - it’s a good mic, nothin more and no magic fairy dust. I do liked Sontronics DM-1 as a 47 FET -style mic for a long time.

AEA R44CX > Neve 1066 > Highland Dynamics BG2 > Burl Mothership. One word: WOW!

We set up a vintage RCA 44 but it needed +75/80db on the pre and exhibited a lot of noise. The AEA needs 15db less. It has a hair less of the crazy proximity effect but is just about as vibey as the RCA. The BG2 compliments the sound a lot, being buttery smooth in british mode.

Last night, deep baritone. @ Heiserman H47 with the K47 headbasket, Neve 1073, CL1b, Audioscape 76a. Results: Completely finished sound!!

I recorded some laid back raps today with WA47 jr.

I also have the bigger brother that I love so much and I got this one for putting up quick demos quite some time ago. I did not like it that much so I got an Oktava 319 for this purpose.

Today I went on some experiment with WA47 jr. with some saturation from Fabfilter Saturn 2. We are in the making of a record and right now we are putting up demos for it. I thought what the hell, let's try the jr. today and DAMN! It's totally gonna go for the record version. So nice!!! Nowhere near as good as the bigger brother but I love the character!

It's a very good sounding mic.
Chad @ Signal Arts can (objectively) further improve it.

But I'd understand if you just leave it stock.

Indeed it is! I must have done something wrong previously. Well, I've been putting it through some UAD plugs and this time I just put it through the Apollo and saturated it just a bit for color. Results were outstanding for my ear. (And as I intend to make music just for the fun of it, it's my ear that matters 😂)

I have noticed that you tend to suggest that mod. Thanks for the tip! It's tempting I have to admit but I'm not sure if it would be worth the hassle and money. Since I live in Finland, I must pay shipping both ways in addition to the costs. And the fact that if the jr. is lacking I can always trust the brother!

Oktava 319 is a great mic too! I love the darkness of mine. I prefer darker mics for raps as they tend to be less sibilant and sibilance is an enemy when I crush my vocals with compressor. Some can deal with it and some are less sibilant au naturel, but with my skill of mixing and my voice, I prefer going this way. And I really love the 47 style of sound in vocal, it goes well with the style of mine.

I found it to sibilant for these modern times....

I think it does the really-close-up Sparklehorse/Reznor sort of thing very well. Never heard it with a k47 in it though. Any male-vocalist records you’ve worked on with your k47 u95 I could listen to for comparison?

I'm currently trying the Golden Age GA-47 XT, the one with switchable heads. Very nice build quality. Feels very highend. Will post a YT video on it in a week or two.

I'm using a KMS105 for live and livestreams, and a u87ai for recordings.

I don’t have one constant vocal mic so I can’t remember exactly from record to record. I can only say that I felt like there was a disconnected peak in hi freq from the body that would annoy the **** out of me, and now it’s all one nice gradual curve

Last night, the U67 with an Amperex EF86 choob installed. It's a different mic to having a Telefunken EF806s/S installed. Much better for femvox.

I'm also using a Heil PR35 in venues where the KMS105 is having trouble (extremelly loud venues).

And as a follow-up, recorded some of my own bvox last night with the second of my two Amperex EF86 tubes. HOLY FREAKING WOW!! The U67 is a whole other mic with that one installed. A very COOL whole other microphone. the Detail rivals a U47 with a K47 cap but not the same 'kack' or 'gack'

Sounds exactly like my MXL V69me.
