16.4.2 vs R16 inserts/using outboard gear

Hi,
I've got a Presonus 16.4.2 and I'm using it mainly for home studio work using protools 10. I like to mix using the firewire returns and I'm aware that the inserts don't work when doing this.
If anyone else has any suggestions on how I can use my outboard gear when mixing... Should I send things through the aux sends?

Also, when I purchased the 16.4.2 I wasn't aware of the A&H R16... Do the R16's inserts works when mixing through the desk from protools?
If they do perhaps the R16 would the way to go considering I don't do live sound work.

Thanks.

I'm assuming that yes is directed towards the R16...

Look at the mackie onyx 1640i also. There are enough clips on YouTube and elsewhere that you will be able to hear the sound of each board. The Zed is a little darker, the Onyx sounds more open.

Here for the gear

R16 is good, but you should look at video reviews to get a better idea of what you want personally.
