Waddaya need it for? You can get little bitty transformers for small items that don't draw much current, or great big huge things for power amps and console power supplies.

Make sure you get one that is rated for the current draw you're plannng to give it, and for audio stuff you may want to put a meter on the AC output (while it is under full load) and take a look at the waveform. Some transformers get pretty 'creative' with the AC sine wave.

Couple of years ago I bought two of the heavy duty ones from Fry’s; they weigh about 15lb each (most electrical supply stores sell them as well).
One is being used for my espresso machine and the other for Audio only.
Dave is right, make sure you have a power conditioner in the chain.
Here is how I do it: 110V Gear --> Furman power conditioner --> 110 to 240 converter.

A-HA! Then you don't need a 120V to 240V transformer, you need a 240V to 120V stepDOWN transformer. They're even cheaper. You can buy them at just about any electronics store and you can also find them in stores that sell luggage and travel supplies like REI or the Travel Store.

One other thing - You'll have to verify that the gear can operate properly from 50 Hz AC instead of the 60 Hz used in the states.
