I'm not compressing drums anymore...

I am co-producing an EP for this band. We just did the drum/bass/guitar tracks this week. This is the first project that I decided NO MORE compressing drums. I did end up knocking back the kick 1db and the snare 1/2 db and the OH's 1db.

I did a submix that knocked the drum/bass back about 1/2 db.

Next time, even less. I want to push my limits.

I think I am going to do this on everything.

I am trying to get the sample up, But when I burn the disc as an MP3, the laptop sees is as a CDA file(?!).

I never compress the close mics or the overheads. Room mics are a different story.

In the digital realm, you won't have much luck without serious peak limiting (on everything, always).

The last two sessions I had I went to tape (sacralige!) with a finger of compression on the snare and kick and toms and it sounded soooo good (and different than if I had compressed after the fact) that need no compression on any drums during mix down. Word.

Just compressing Room mic's here.. rock n roll on PT

But then I monitor my PT session while tracking WITH drum aux bus compression, (and a bit of HF & Sub eq lift ) so like some people MIX into compression - I am TRACKING into compression - but this compression & EQ is 'monitor only' .... so I (or a 3rd party mixer) can always fall back to - uncompressed signal...

On rare occaisions kick & snare might get some dbx 160vu hardware lovin with a tad of compression....

Back in my analog tape days.. I would compress room and sometimes snare a little so that rolls were tamed a little...

If I am overdubbing drums to a whole track (say whole track done in the artists appartment and drums being the last 'icing on the cake' to be added..) Then sometimes a lot of dynamic control comes into play as I have, with the whole track in front of me, a good idea of the dynamic range... I can then 'crush' the drums to fit into this range.. Also these clients, working at home, often dont have the wide range of hardware compression advantage that I do

2 x ch Dbx 160 vu compressors
1 x ch UA 1176 limiter
1 x ch ADR vocal Stresser
Stereo SSL compressor
2 x ch Distressor compressor
4 x ch SPL Transient Designer compressor
2 x ch Cranesong STC8 compressor

I'm curious. If you don't compress drums.. Is it because your drummers are so consistent as to not need leveling? (The ones I record are not.
What about the peak Vs average levels for the final mixes? Isn't some limiting desirable at some point in the process?
I find there is generally a certain amount I can chop off the top w/o taking a sonic hit, and that there are plenty of times where the tune simply calls for a little 'forwardness to the kit, thus some compression there also.

Not compressing when recording digitally doesn't make a lot of sense to me. When recording to analog tape, even if you're not using hardware compressors, the tape is still compressing for you. With digital, I track with compression not to squash, but to round out things in a similar approximation of what tape can and does do to the transients.

But in the end, as they say, if it sounds good, it is good.

Dude.

Take some Niacin and breathe really slowly.

Oh, and . . .

I'm not so sure about the hippo, but James Bond is in Felix's right eye, and the rifling at the bottom of the white area is his mouth.

Oh, and P.S.

Don't Compress The Close Mics On Drums When Tracking.... unless you have an atomic squeezebox that is stike I love that effin thang
