Preamp Advice

I've fallen in love with the 500 series format quite some time ago and strangely enough I've only ever had the pleasure of listening to and slightly tweaking a Dual Vandergraph at last year's AES convention with Mr. Reardon himself! The format is just very appealing to me for some reason...

Now I am highly considering attaining a 6-slot lunchbox.

However, I would like to begin my 500 series adventure with a preamp.

Being that I am on a budget (around $1,300) I would like to be able to get a preamp that is really versatile.

Also, it will be a little while before I can get another module for the lunchbox, and she would remain quite empty for some time... so would it seem fitting to consider a different preamp (non 500 series) altogether?

To sum it up, are any 500 series preamps flexible enough for the price of the lunchbox/preamp combo?

Or put more generically, where would you turn with $1,300 in hand and a desire for a versatile preamp, 500 series, or not.

Thanks in advance!

There is tons of info on this site about 500 series pres.

The good news is that there are tons of amazing pres 500 series pres in your budget from A Designs, API, Avedis, Electrodyne, LaChapell, Great River... and of those would be amazing and versatile.
