Toft Mixer or any analog mixer routing with a DAW

I am interested in how the Toft mixer would work with using outboard pre's, EQ's and comps along with a DAW and plug ins.

In order to use the plug ins in your DAW and the mixer it appears that you have to route your signal (Portico pre for instance) through the line in of the Toft mixer. (That way you can track on the mixer and use the built in EQ). Then the signal would go out of the DIR ouput of the channel into a new channel in your DAW. This means you would have Vocal 1 out in your DAW and a Vocal 1 in on your DAW. Then you can add your plug ins and have your wave file there to work with. After than you have to route those channels to the Monitor returns in the Toft mixer. At that point, all your tracks would go to your main speaker outputs of your mixer so you can hear them? Once everything is mixed, you create a 2 bus mix in your DAW. (All tracks routed back to the DAW would bounce inside your DAW to a 2 bus). If you wanted to put a bus compressor after that, you would have to be route the 2 channels back to the mixer again through a line in and back through the monitor returns to your DAW.

It sounds a little confusing but am I right with my assumption?

The other option is to just mix through the Toft mixer and put a 2 bus mix on your DAW. But that way you don't have automation for each track and the ablity to add plug ins to each track either as the plug ins would not work during your tracking stage.

It seems if you have to route your signal in the mixer twice, a 16 channel converter would only offer you 8 channels of work flow?
