Compressor for Drum sub mix?

What's your current favorite compressor for drums on the sub mix? And do you have compressor styles you like or don't like on drums sub mix buss (opto, vca, fet, vari, etc.)

whatever i have available that works in that application... generally i like a fast ass comp that smacks the transients and stuff the k/s/t into it and bring that right up under the drum mix.

lately however i have been comping individually rather than using any submix comp...

GML 8900 if there is one available or SSL/Smart comp. Sometimes Joe Meek if going for that slow attack thing.

Are you finding that you are using JUST the compressed sub mix or tucking it behind the drums? I have been going back and forth lately depending on the song and production. I used to never JUST use the sub mix . . but lately I have found myself using JUST sub for certain effect.

I use my dbx 160VU's since I have them and I don't like them on much else. I've also used (cough cough) a Behringer Composer from time to time. Almost anything will work for me, an 1178, RNC's etc. as long as it's not too smooth.

On live drums? SSL Quad. Gives you a headache (love it) or the Neve 33609.

Rap/R&B? I never sub compress.

I tend to use the RNC for drum sub. The Joe Meek SC2.2 on slower songs. I don't often "tuck it in." I usually sub the drums and apply compression. I do sometimes use the tuck method. If I do it usually comes in and out in to add something to certain sections of the song.

Linked SSL channel comps.

Sometimes an 1178 or a pair of 160s or distressors.

Neve 2264 /e with varible attack release option.

Urei 1176/78

Eilco ABC (Australian Broadcast Corporation) FET LA2A limiter... compresses the bejeus out of room mics, drum subs with out killing dynamics or sucking out the bottom end.

some times Al Smart c2... but i generally liek some colur and funk.. it has signature compression characteristics, but no colour like the above options.

I usualy don't compress the kit outright. Most times I'll compress a submix (or partial submix) and push that back under the "dry kit". The Meek SC2.2 really works for me on this, pair of 160x's also.

Alan Smart C2 or Neve 33609(if neither is being used on the mixbuss). Also a DBX160SL. I mix a lot of pop/rnb/dance/alternative and on the electronic stuff I tend to compress less the individual sounds, but I do a lot of mults. On the live stuff anything goes because on their own they usually sound like crap!!

I'm another big 160SL fan for drum subs. I also have got great results with the TC DBmax (Finalizer's Big Brother) and my old stand by is a piar of mono Manley Vari-Mu's...

Alan Smart C2 under the uncompressed drums. Today I compressed the **** out of the OH/Snare/Room - tracks with the crunch mode engaged. I loved it for one song. The so called producer liked it on a second songtut It's hard to mix, if you think something isn't quite right.

Interesting thread . . . . in the old days in NYC, many of us would use a mono return for compressed drums . . . . sometimes a single 1176 would do the trick perfectly. From the sound of many choices here . . . it sounds as if many are using a stereo compressor, so I assume you are returning in stereo. I do both, depending on the sound I am looking for. I really want to give the API a roll.
Old 19th September 2002
Mono is fine IMO if you are just using it for kick and snare, which some people just do. Depending on the song I may also put in overheads or tom tracks (if used).

stereo AND a totally gonzo mono!

compressor for drum submix

I dont really submix the drums or use the submix to send to a compressor.
I tend to individually compress drums. On a few recent mixes I did, the snare
was dull and did'nt really have any smack, so I sent that to a compressor which I returned to another fader, set the compressor for a slow attack, added some more top and mixed it in with what I already had. I use an SSL
fxg384 on the 2 mix also.
