Yeah, agreed. I have my doubts about whether these types of players know - when NOT to play. After a while it just becomes musical masturbation. Now, I'm not going to prejudge Royster because i've never seen him in a live band setting (as opposed to these clinic videos). Maybe he can lay down simple grooves all nite without being tempted to go to chopsland. But that Hella video - ok he can play a lot of fast patterns and flurries of bombastic stuff but its just not musical to my ears. I cant listen for very long. It just doesn't move me (and i'm no rock hater).

I'll take the guy who didn't learn to play until he was 30 but knows exactly how much (or little) to play, when to play it, and is only there for the song ANY DAY.
